The picturesque, car-free and historic town of Orta, situated on the lake with the same name, invites you to chill in its cafes. Piazza Motta, the central square, is located on the waterfront overlooking the monastery island of San Giulio which can be reached by boat.
The monastery and the 22 chapels on the Sacro Monte above Orta are dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.
The nearby Alpe Selviana, with the waterfalls of the Pescone River and rock pools washed out through millennia, are worth visiting.
For a longer day trip you can visit the Borromean Islands on nearby Lake Maggiore.
