After an hour’s drive from Koroni we reach the port of Pylos.
From there it is only a stone’s throw to the bay surrounded by rocks. On the left rock is the castle ruin Paleo Kastro with great views over the bay of Navarino, the lagoon and the Half-Moon Beach.
Underneath lies Nestor’s Cave, which was already mentioned in ancient Greek myths as an ancient settlement and cultic site and was revered as a sanctuary in the Mycenaean Bronze Age.

According to legend, it was used by King Nestor as a stable. He was one of the most experienced advisers of King Agamemnon, the army commander and chief king of the Mycenaeans, during the campaign to Troy.
The patron goddess of merchants, shepherds and thieves Hermes is said to have hidden here the cattle he had stolen from Apollo. Also pirates have made themselves at home here.
The ascent is easily possible over a narrow path along the dunes of the Voidokilia Bay.
